Chavan belongs to an influential political family based in Nanded district of Maharashtra state. Ashok Rao Chauhan was born on 28 October 1958 to ex Maharashtra Chief Minister Shankarrao Chavan. Being born in a politically influenced family Ashok Chavan was never a new face to the public.

His father Shankarrao Chavan  was one of the most influential leaders of Indian National Congress in Maharashtra and served as the chief minister of Maharashtra state from 8 December 2008 to 9 November 2010. (ashok chavan biography).


Chavan did his schooling at the St. Xavier’s High school. Graduated in science and has obtained his Master’s in business management from Hazarimal Jomani college and B.Y.K. College of commerce.

Personal Life

Chief Minister

Former Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh resigned from his post after terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November 2008 and took the entire moral responsibility. In that scenario the party accepted the leader’s resignation and appointed Chavan as the new chief Minister of Maharashtra. Ashok Chavan was elected as the chief Minister of Maharashtra after winning assembly elections in 2009. He contested the 2019 Lok sabha elections from Nanded constituency but lost the elections to BJP. He is one of the nine former Chief Ministers of Congress who lost in Lok Sabha 2019 election. 

Controversy and allegations

Resignation from the Congress party

Lately the politician handed over his one line resignation letter to the State Congress President Nana patole. Things seem to have flared up since the leader who was once responsible for revival of Maharashtra Congress, now resigns. Ashok Chavan becomes the third prominent Congress leader in Maharashtra to quit the party after Milind Deora and Baba Siddiqui. He made a public announcement of his resignation on X formerly Twitter. Assumptions are made that Chavan might end up joining BJP since the deputy chief Minister Devendra fadnavis declared that some of the prominent leaders from the parties will join the BJP.
